Science Friction

Today we read a story in our reading book about a Sudanese refugee named John. John's story--from losing his family to starting first grade when he was eighteen years old to finally coming to America and going to college--was sad and inspiring. It led to a good discussion on First World Problems. I was kind of surprised that the kids knew this concept so well, but I'm happy that they did.

Here are some shots of the kids doing Science a couple days ago. They were sucking air, water, and flour into a syringe and making scientific observations. They did this again today, but with a different experiment. They also wrote these observations down in their science notebooks. I began collecting them today for a grade, just to make sure they are recording their observations and procedurals carefully--you know, just like real scientists.
